The United Way Tocqueville Society is a society that not only recognizes exceptional leadership in the field of philanthropy but also makes a significant impact. Society members are among the United Way movement's most enduring and engaging allies. The annual contribution of Tocqueville Society members is a pledge of $10,000 or more annually.
Both of these resources enable our movement to further its mission and execute its efforts to promote the common welfare. When Alexis Charles-Henri Clerel de Tocqueville traveled around the United States in 1831, he was only 26. Democracy in America, a study of American society and politics, was founded on his observations, readings, and discussions. One of his most significant observations was that Americans share a distinctive inclination to contribute to the public good, particularly during times of crisis.
In 1984, United Way America established the Alexis de Tocqueville Society in this manner. Today, the Society is one of the most esteemed institutions in the world for individuals dedicated to enhancing the quality of life and fortifying communities.
